Speaking for myself on Blu-Ray. I am very careful in my BD purchases, besides the fact that i haven't bought a deck yet. Yeah, yeah, i know. The first Hi-Def image I got to see was a copy of, all things, Grease, and i was singularly unimpressed, the Hi-Def image magnified the grain to the point of distraction.

OK.  I just assumed most folks were out to get the film, not necessarily to adhere to a specific media format.  Whenever I read the "I only buy blu" comment, I just find myself amazed that someone would want to limit themselves so severely.

Agree. I would still buy certain (older) movies and series on DVD if I know they aren't coming out on blu or if the gain in quality is minimal.

However, I must admit that when a movie or series is available on Blu-ray and said Blu-ray offers noticeably better quality than the DVD counterpart, I will always buy Blu, even if it's more expensive. For example: since I didn't own the remastered Star Trek TOS DVD's, I bought the first season on Blu.

So yes, the main point for me is the movie or series itself, but I also try to get the best possible quality for them. If that means I have to wait a bit longer or pay a bit more, then I don't have a problem with that.

That's widely available in R2.

To my knowledge, this hasn't been released on Blu-Ray anywhere. You can sign up to be notified when it's released at Amazon.com

Chris is right. You didn't ask specifically about Blu-Ray in your original post, which is why I thought a DVD release would do.

What's wrong with that? If you know you're going to be buying a Blu-ray player at some point, I see it as a good idea to start buying Blu-rays now if you come across good deals.

Indeed. For both Blu & DVD I had my first discs before I had the player. Although in both cases the player was on order.

I have been buying blu for more then a year!

Just got my player last week!

I waited until I could upgrade my plasma from an old Samsung 480p to a Panasonic 1080p.

The main problem is any Blu-rays you buy now will probably be cheaper by the time you get a player.

True enough...every week I find Blu-rays on sale for $15 or less.

It's great, isn't it? Hopefully the trend will continue.

Even now you will occasionally see titles for under $10.00. Perhaps a $7.50 bargin bin be a reality in a year or so and everyday prices will be under $20.00!    (one can dream  )

Check out something current, shot on HD, like Coraline, or a true classic with beautiful restoration such as The Searchers or Robin Hood

You got yourself a wrong first impression  Just forget it.

My first impression of blu-ray (with a Sony X-series FullHD-tv a year ago) was Pixar's "Ratatouille" and it was a fantastic experience. I never looked back, and I never imagined that a movie could look so brilliant on a TV-screen.

My first full-on comparison was the DVD version of Blade Runner's Final Cut compared with Blade Runner's Final Cut on Blu-ray. The winner was easily determinable.

my first comparison was van helsing... dvd vs. hd-dvd... which for this convo, is essentially the same picture quality as blu-ray...

details of the ocean water, the faces, hair, etc... it was not even a fight... this little test made it about 3 minutes before i turned off the dvd... and sold it  LOL

For me it was Cars.  That looks exceptional on Blu.
