Let's not be obtuse here, OK?  We ALL know what the main cast is, and we ALL know that there are several ways of presenting those cast members.

Let's also stipulate that at some point, somebody is going to have to watch the stupid program to be able to list ANY of the cast, main or not.

Really?  I thought I knew what main cast was too, until this thread started.  I quickly learned (unlike others) that the term main cast means different things to different people, and identifying who is and who isn't from one episode to the next is not straight forward at all.

Quote:
So, let's not go off the deep end and make out like its such a huge trial putting the main cast at the top.  It's a pain in the ass to do ANY of it, truth be told!

Give us a straightforward easily applied definition of what constitutes the "Main Cast" in all cases, and we might be able to proceed from there.  Until then  Option1 cannot be implemented.

Quote:
But let's list a few definitions here, just to see if anything flies:

Main Cast:  Those cast members who are the primary characters and are usually listed at the beginning of the show in some way, which may also include recurring guest stars.  Primary cast members who do not appear in every episode should still be listed as Main Cast.  Use the cast order listed in the first episode even if the order changes somewhat over the course of the remaining episodes.

Not all TV shows list cast at the beginning of the show!  If they are not at the beginning, but are simply listed with the rest of the cast in the end credits, how do you determine which are "main cast"?
What about someone who starts in the middle of the season and is listed in the opening credits starting in the third episode of the season?  How about the 26th episode?

So recurring Guest Stars would be part of the "Main Cast" in your definition?  How often do they have to recur?  Twice, 5 times, for at least half the episodes, 80%....what?

By listing "Main Cast" regardless of whether they appear in every episode, you have no way of knowing which episodes they are in and which ones they are not in.  Not terribly useful!

Quote:

I would also say that for sake of brevity, we should stipulate that cast/crew lists be done on a disc by disc basis so that we don't have to wade through a whole season's worth of list on every profile.

Yes for you and those that advocate disc level child profiles, that works just fine, but the Rules need to be for everyone and Ken has already stated that the parent profile will retain all information, inclucing cast and crew for all episodes.

It will not take someone very long to take a downloaded #2 cast list and edit it to their preference for their local db if they don't like accurate data.

The easiest (and fastest) way to do this is to use a 3rd party program (Notepad or some other word processor).  Copy all cast in profiler, paste into notepad, and start editing away.  (good idea to leave wordwrap off)  The search/replace function can mark duplicate entries, then you go through and delete them. Move the single "main cast" entries above the first episode divider. Copy all and paste back into profiler and you have your main cast up at the top. Takes maybe 15 - 20 minutes.

But for the rest of us, the accurate data will already be in the main db, properly formatted, as credited and in credits order.

Perfect. So obviously, that argument holds no weight whatsoever.

No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose…

Right, and if the data is so cumbersome and unwieldy that we have to copy/paste the data to use a third party program to edit it and then copy/paste that back into Profiler, then the divider system is broke.  There are a lot of people who may have problems accomplishing all that.

Nobody HAS to do that. He's just offering suggestions.

Like I said, you're willing to find any little argument you can come up with against Option #2, no matter how many times you're proven wrong.

That's just it, I'm not wrong.  It's a different way of doing it that YOU and some others don't like, but that doesn't make it wrong.  I could make it work well enough to make me happy, and well enough so that nobody else would have a problem figuring out what I meant.  I don't like doing extra work just because its easier.  I prefer to do it right the first time, however that might be.  Obviously, we have a difference of opinion on what is the preferable way to do it.

Am I arguing for my point?  You bet!  Just like you are for yours.  The road runs both ways, my friend.

Well the balance is definitely shifting.

Quick let's close the poll and get Ken to implement!

Agree. I think the season profiles which now include all cast and crew are fantastic!

if skipper means that the disc level profiles are also fantastic, i agree. we like child profiles. i don't want to scroll through 22 groups of names.

Yes it is shifting, but you might also notice there are now 105 votes. The other day when #1 was the overwhelming favorite it was much closer to 70, so some people have changed votes but more have decided to vote for #2.

But it also shows that there are a lot of people, nearly as many in fact, who prefer the other way of doing it.  You can't just ignore that fact and say that because you have a few more votes that what the other half wants doesn't count.

This poll is INVALID. All of the information was not properly represented at the start of the poll. If we want a true answer as to how the community feels, the poll needs to be redone.
