| Posted: | | | | Surely HIS common name isn't David Lucas?! I've been entering data for him for most of the animations I have and it's almost always Steve Blum.
Don't we need a common name thread to establish which is the common name? It looks way too complicated right now. | | | Last edited: by GreyHulk |

Grey - the Common name stuff is a bit of a joke as there is no way to link those names to one actor UID
There needs to be a massive up[date to dealing with Actors names and cross linking to aka

| Posted: | | | | Isn't that what a common name thread is for? By using a common name, we can link all those credits to one actor in our DBs. Assuming they have been all identified as his.
Those 200 titles could be 50 titles of varying spelling, and he may not even be credited that way in the actual film credits |

| Posted: | | | | Well see, how the hell are you going to actually link the info here to a DB that no one is doing up keep ?
The changes need to be made at some level IN the database.
The idea is good for these threads/post but it is a wasted effort until the DB is fixed linking these names.
So if you try to add lets say Jeff J. Blum when your DB syncs up attempts the upload it see's that name is linked to a master UID of Jeff Blum with additional alias also attached, so it change your entry to show Jeff Blum credited as Jeff J. Blum
Something else that is an issue is the Jeff J Blum is technically different than Jeff J. Blum which is silly. Same problem with the names that McClue and Mcclue coming up as different.

| Posted: | | | | We are doing the upkeep. And really, you should only care about your local DB.
If you link up all your Steve Blums and Steve J Blums to a David Lucas common name, then they will be linked in your Profiler. If you submit those, then it will help others to link him up in their local databases.
A common name thread is tool to discover the true common name, so that we are all working in the same direction. |

| Posted: | | | | How do you link actors names in this system? Because when I edit a actor there is no link/common name
The linking needs to be automatic in the adding and building of cast list. You have to take the act out of the users hands because they will bugger up your data. It also have to be consistant across the entire DVDP line of products/DB's

| Posted: | | | | Linking actors or crew names are up to you to do in your personal DB. The only tools that are provided are CLT for the common name. Common name threads, that will have all the variations. And BY to seperate same common names. |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting RobAGD: Quote: How do you link actors names in this system? In the Profile Editor (section "Cast") you enter the assumed "Common Name" (e.g. Tom Cruise) and press Alt+A. Next a little Pop Up-window will show here you can enter two things: 1) The rolename (in the lower text-field) 2) The name actually used in the credits (in the upper text-field) (e.g. Robert de Niro). By default the upper text-field will show the value you chose on the left pane of the profile editor, but you can enter any value here. Regarding your request to build in some automatic system for this. I wouldn't know how that was supposed to work. For this the program would have to know by far too many variables to give correct results. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! | Posted: | | | | It a linked UID system each actor gets a Unique ID with in the data base. As alias are added those alias get a UID linked to the common name or real name of the actor ( depends on how you want to work the naming system )
It would require someone in the invelos side to maintain - Or it could also be added to the profile contributions and then the info can be posted and voted on or approved by approvers for integration to the DB.

123456789012 (main id identifier)
123456789012/a = Steve Blum 123456789012/b = David Lucas /c = Daniel Andrews /d = Richard Cardona /e = Brandon Jeremy /f = Steve Bloom /g =Steven Jay Blum
and so on for the other 6 variations. With the sub-identifier with the most titles as the Common name, that could be changed if needed. |

-R Doomed to fail and that mainly for one reason: Users are still needed to monitor if "Johnny Doe" is a) a variant of John Doe b) an already existing Johnny Doe c) and if "Yes" which one of the 25 d) a new Johnny Doe, not existent yet in our database e) a Hoax-entry for someone completely different f) to be continued ... In fact this UID is as good or bad as the existing common name. It doesn't solve any of the existing problems, it just moves them to a more abstract level. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! IMDb with literally thousands of Phantom entries or incorrectly linked names isn't the smallest piece of crap better than our database. Those IMDb ID-numbers just look significantly cooler. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?
