TV Single Title

I'm having a disagreement with another user on volume indicators for TV series singles. They are not covered in the rules. Under TV series the Title rule reads "The title for a Box Set should be the..." nothing about singles.

For R1 this applies to Anime and a handful of other shows (mostly older) that were released as single discs and not as a season box set. R2 Japan also has TV singles, I'm not sure about other regions other then Anime.

There are three basic formats used.

1. Series Name with volume # (example: Samurai Champloo: Volume 06 may appear as just a number "6", or "Vol. 6" or "Volume 6" or "Volume Six" or something related to the series example: Stellvia: Foundation VI)
2. Series Name + Volume # + Volume title (example: To Heart: Volume 1: New Feelings)
3. Series Name with volume title. (example Revolutionary Girl Utena: Revelation) *

A non anime example would be the original Star Trek singles example: Star Trek: The Original Series Vol. 39 and there is no volume number on the cover of this series.

Most people include a numerical volume indicator even for type 3 titles, including Star Trek. I think this is the way TV Singles should be handled.

Another user wants to remove the volume indicator for a series that's in the database because it's not on the cover, quoting the TV series season set rules. Season sets ALWAYS have a season indicator if there is more then one season. There are no type 3 season sets...

Why I think volume indicators are so important that they should be added even if they don't appear on the cover (type 3).

- What order should they be watched in?
- I have volume 1 and I want to add volume 2 to my wish list, there are 39 entries that just say Star Trek: The Original Series how do I find volume 2? (this is why all online stores add a volume # to titles that don't have them)

It's not like we are making something up, the second DVD with epiodes 5-8 is volume 2 even if they don't put the volume # on the cover*

Proposed changes for the TV set rules... (what most people do now anyway)

  ........................................

TV Series on DVD come in 3 separate types:

    * Complete Series/Season sets
    * Anthologies of Episodes that do not form a complete series or season.
    * Single DVD volumes that when collected for a complete series or season.

Title - The title for a Box Set should be the title listed on the Front Cover; for example The Andy Griffith Show.  Season indicators, if listed on the cover, should be entered as part of the title, not the description.  e.g. Angel: The Complete First Season.
The title for Single Volumes should be the title listed on the Front Cover, followed by the volume indicator, and if present on the cover; for example To Heart: Volume 1: New Feelings.
If a volume indicator is not included on the cover you may add one if known, if a volume indicator is on the cover it should be entered as shown; for example Stellvia: Foundation VI.

What do people think?

Is the volume number so useful that it should be part of the title, and added if it is missing from the cover?
Should the rules be updated to include TV singles? - If you don't collect anime you may never see a TV series single but for the people that do there are a couple thousand profiles in the database.

Usually we never add stuff that isn't found on the front cover.

The ordering could be done by the sort title.

The problem with invented volume numbers would be that the people won't agree on how to write the number.

Is it "Volume 1", or "Vol. One" or (if localized) "Teil 1"?

Sorry, don't have a solution either, just more questions...

I am not an anime expert. But I agree with DJ. If it does NOT appear on the Cover don't invent it, the beef is not with profiler but with whoever is producing the title for being inconsistent, Yoiu of course, are free to do whatever you wish to locally, but if the data is not there....it's simply not there...and i would not support interpreting it for the Online, I might do it locally, but deinitely not for the Online.

I fully agree. Just use what is on the cover for online database. Everything else should stay in your local database.

I agree with the other replies... if they are not on the case they should not be in the online database. And so you know.. I have the first 10 volumes of Star Trek... and they do indeed have the vol. numbers... they are on the spine of the cover.

There is at least one example where title data can come from another source, possessives.

But that's not going to help people adding by title for their wish list.

The actual number is not invented, the first disc will always be volume 1. The format is not important as long as it's consistent for each series, it's not like the series that have numbers always use one format. And from all the profiles I have seen where the volume number has been added that's never been a problem, the few that start out inconsistent are quickly fixed with later updates.

Well there are some who say we can only use the front of the cover, we should have 39 entries that just say Star Trek: The Original Series.

What ever the outcome it should be added to the rules since right now the section that starts with the line "TV Series on DVD come in 2 separate types:" effectively denies the existence of singles.

The rule says if on the cover... not if on the front cover... so anyone that says we can only use the front cover is wrong per the rules...

See where I put in bold above.

I brought up that singles should be added to the list on how TV on DVD comes out in the rules committee forum quite some time ago... and was basically told it is not needed.
