| | Posted: | | | | does anyone know of a decent DVD editing software that allows you to create custome menus with a backing track, background, and allows you to place the buttons for play or whatever where you like i got loads of old 1920s silent movies on video and on my PC i want to transfer for safety reasons and i know i can get 3 or 4 per DVD so a menu is a must.

Can't much help you with what you're looking for though. I'm assuming you're using a Windows PC? Last time I did something like that on Windows I was using Ulead's program. It was decent. Macs come with iDVD. It too is decent.
I'd suggest a trip to download.com and read their reviews.

| | Posted: | | | | Not exactly cheap, but DVD-lab Pro is an extremely flexible DVD authoring software somewhere between hobby and professional market. I've tested an older version (1.53 I think) successfully in the past. You can download a test version which is fully functional for 30 days. |

| | Posted: | | | | Another vote for DVD-lab Pro, but understand this isn't a trivial undertaking. A lot of these programs assume that your video is already properly edited and formatted for DVD. The ones that do all-in-one typically suck during the transcoding process. You can bang out a DVD, but it looks like crap. If you just want to dump stuff out to disk with a basic menu and have the program do all the video work, Nero Vision, included in the Nero Burning suite, is as good as anything else. |

any ideas welcome Sounds like you want something that is more toward the professional level but not as expensive. Most of the consumer grade authoring programs are crap. The newest version of Power Producer from Cyberlink is pretty good, well ahead of the rest of the pack. The really good stuff is pro grade, but even the low end there will cost you a couple grand. | | Posted: | | | | From a home-use point of view I'd have to add my vote to DVD Lab Pro - last time I tried it, it had some very nice features you'd normally find in a professional package, especially for the menus - which is what you seem to want. But I have to admit, my favourite is still my old copy of DVD Maestro - curse Apple for getting rid of it!  Edit: it's worth noting that very often professional menus are created outside of the DVD authoring software and then imported for use. If you're looking for software that lets you create the menu, you may be better off looking for video editing/graphics software instead - depending on what you want the final menu to look like. | | | | Last edited: by northbloke |

Nothing too complex though, but it works. It'll even auto-downscale your videos to fit if you want. |
